The Patriot

The film â€Å"The Patriot† Is about a father named Benjamin Martin who quit fighting In order to raise his family but is forced to fight when his son Gabriel Martin returns to the army after being injured. Benjamin leads a militia into battle against the British army who were considered as the most powerful army in the world at the time. At the beginning of the movie, the mood starts off In a happy way because it's a sunny day and the kids were excited because the post rider came.Benjamin Martin vaults his wives grave just before sunset and stands there for a while which gives the watcher a sad feeling as well. They are living on a farm in South Carolina and it is the year 1776. This is the time of the American Revolution which is why this film connects to the revolution. At the beginning of the film the post rider brings an Invitation to go loin the continental army and their fight for Independence. Throughout the film you see many things that also relate to the American Rev olution. For example, the type of battle that the militia was using is called Guerilla warfare. The southern militia specialized In this during the American Revolution. A loyalist Is a person who Is loyal to their home country whether they are inside or outside of that country. A loyalist is a person who would never betray or try to change their country and how it is. A patriot is someone who does not agree with what their country has done and wants to fight against their country for their own reasons. A patriot betrays Its home country for a good cause, not for something unworthy. An example of an act that caused the revolution would be the stamp act. This is an act where you had to pay a tax in order to get a stamp to put up flyers. An example of a patriot from the film is Gabriel Martin. Gabriel Martin wanted to Join the continental ingress so bad that he enlisted without permission from his father Benjamin. Gabriel did all he could to bring victory to the colonies. An example of a loyalist In the movie would be Kernel Titivating. Titivating goes to extreme measures just to make sure that the patriots learn that the British army is more superior. An example of this is when Gabriel Is being taken away by the Red Coats and Thomas tries to help him Benjamin son and Gabrielle brother. Benjamin plays a patriot in the movie for many reasons. At the beginning of the movie he did not want to fight because he had to keep his family safe. But he ended p fighting because whether he was with them or not they were never going to be safe until the war was over. Near the end of the movie Benjamin runs up with the American flag during a fight and starts waving it around showing that America's time was now.Benjamin doing this action proves that he is a patriot because he would have never done that so proudly If he was a loyalist or neither. Another action where Benjamin proves that he is a patriot is when he joins the army. Benjamin joined the army to fight with his son and ma ke sure he stays safe but he also did it so he could bring peace by stopping the British army. Benjamin wouldn't rebel against Britain unless he thought something was wrong. The Patriot is a somewhat credible movie. This is because the journal says that â€Å"This 1 OFF epic† (American History Journal 1).This proves that some things were accurate in this film. Another part of this Journal says â€Å"Adding more credibility to the historical accuracy of this film was the participation of historians from the Smithsonian National Museum of American History as consultants† (American History Journal 1). These quotations prove that The Patriot is credible for some things they did in the movie. The next quotation helps prove that there are parts of the movie that are not credible. The Journal says â€Å"However, much of the patriot is not historically accurate† (American History Journal 1).An example of the movie being incorrect is the last battle where the British gav e up because that was not the correct battle. The inaccuracies in the movie The Patriot harm and help the watchers. They can harm the watchers because it leads them to believe something that is incorrect. This can cause the viewer to be wrong if they used it as answer on a test for example. This can also hurt viewers because it misleads them to think that the British were impolitely evil. For example, the British never torched the church with the whole community inside the church. This was showed in the movie. The inaccuracies in the movie can help the viewers because it shows Americans dominating and fighting through everything to pursue the goal of independence and freedom. For example, Benjamin never ran through the battlefield waving the flag without being shot or captured. But this shows the viewers that America is strong and proud. Therefore, this proves that the inaccuracies in this movie can be beneficial and harmful. This was a good film over all. The inaccuracies made it mo re interesting and intrigued me.This film should be recommended to ages 14 and up because then everyone would understand the values and the storyline of the movie. Anyone with knowledge of the American Revolution should enjoy this film because it sums up the revolution fairly accurate and makes it better by showing America strong. This movie teaches us to pursue our goals and never stop until the goal is reached. We see this throughout the whole movie. Two examples of this being showed in the movie are with Benjamin and his family. The second example is with the colonies in general because they come together to fight for independence at the cost of life.

Lord Henry’s Characterisation in Chapters 1-4 Dorian Gray

Lord Henrys Characterisation in chapters 1-4 Lord Henry’s character is perhaps the most influential in the novel, serving as the one of the prime contributors to Dorian’s corruption. In chapter 1, Basil pleas Wotton to stay away from Dorian as not to â€Å"spoil him†, then, after a pause states, â€Å"mind harry, I trust you†. Basil feels these words have been â€Å"†¦wrung out of him almost against his will†; this portrays Lord Henry’s power in influence as Lord Henry has gotten his way without so much as a word.We know Dorian is awfully important to Basil, as we know, he is absolutely infatuated â€Å"he is all my art to me now†. If Lord Henry were dangerous, why would Basil allow him to meet with Dorian? This is because Basil is powerless in the feat of Lord Henry’s manipulative powers. Lord Henry is worldly, experienced and speaks with conviction. , he is confident in his words and is self-assured. His statements are re spected and are rarely challenged, even in his social group of learned aristocrats he is highly respected. From the first page Lord Henry uses complex figures of speech and never misses an opportunity to display his wit. His conversations are always filled with a great amount of puns, wordplay and paradox’s -†there is only one thing worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about† At times it seems he is speaking in riddles, adding to his allure and mysteriousness that captures the reader. He is an artist of language and skillfully uses his art to experiment with people, this is clear in the unique development of his thinking up an idea shown in †he played with the idea, and grew wistful; tossed it into the air and transformed it; let it escape and recaptured it (page 42)â€Å" the actual attention to detail in his ideas as well as his thorough deliberation, convey what gives him such confidence and power. Lord Henrys views are generally cons idered immoral, but, through his eloquent speech and his thoughtful presentation of dialogue the reader, it seems reasonable to consider his impressive, seemingly well argued opinions. This helps us to understand Lord Henry’s ease and capability in the corruption of Dorian. His intelligence diverts from his manipulative nature and bad intentions. He knows his power and makes his own rules, the only person that truly can infiltrate him is himself. He refuses to recognize moral standard. He is a radical asthete and values looks highly over intellect choosing his friends for â€Å"good looks† and his enemies â€Å"for their intellects†. Relative to this, he is enthralled by Dorians good looks and calls him â€Å"charming†.He is also fascinated by Dorian but unlike Basil, see’s him as an experiment and seeks to play with him. Lord Henry says at one point â€Å"I like persons better than principles† displaying his lack of morals and his shallow na ture. He even believes â€Å"intellect destroys beauty† which could possibly be self loathing or could be a fascination with the face value of people, that can be linked to the preface in that art is to be admired and not read beyond how it appears.

Compare and Contrast Communism, Socialism, and Capitalism

What is communism? Communism is a term used broadly to designate a ‘theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state. ’ It refers to the doctrine which underlines the revolutionary movement which aims to abolish capitalism and ultimately to establish a society in which all goods will be socially owned, all economic activates socially planned and controlled, and in which all distributions will be in accordance with the maxim.German author Emil Ludwig described the maxim as â€Å"for each according to his capacity, to each according to his need. †(1) It is to be distinguished from socialism which aims by constitutional and democratic methods to nationalize gradually only the essential means of production and to organize distribution on the basis of a just reward to each person for the amount and quality of his or her work. In its early forms the term â €Å"communism† first came into use in France, after 1840; the general idea being that private property is the source of all social ills which can be cured only by a community of goods and interest. In the Greco- Roman world, Plato expounded the idea in his book The Republic in the 4th century and to stoics implied it in their doctrine of natural right or as they called it â€Å"jus natural† which means according to which natured created all men free and equal and private property was unknown to the original state of nature. (2) According to Karl Marx, this is the final stage towards development of egalitarian society. Here all the resources are state-owned and it determines its distribution based on the needs in an effort to bring about equality. Communism is conservative. Fewer and fewer people have any say in how the economy works.By using state coercion to fulfill unmet demands, it restricts individual freedom. Communism necessarily takes the form of totalitarianism or the tyranny of all over one since it’s up to the state to decide who gets what. Historically, communist societies have been characterized by the absolute rule of a revolutionary party leader, beneath whom everyone is equally subservient. It becomes very difficult for such an economy to survive in a large population when it becomes difficult for equal distribution of resources. (5) Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels are the ones responsible for the theoretical foundations of the modern communism. In their time together Marx and Engels wrote several pieces of documentations and books which started in 1848 with The Communist Manifesto, 1850 Marx’s Class Struggles in France, 1867 The First Volume of Das Kapital, 1871 Civil War in France, 1875 Critique of the Gotha Programme, and in 1877 Engels so called Anti-Duhring. Marx and Engels took over and modified the current concepts of materialism, the Hegelian view of historic evolution as dialectical process moving from thesis th rough antithesis to synthesis, the labor theory of value of David Ricardo, The critique of capitalism of the ‘Utopian â€Å"by French socialist, and tactics of Blanqui. In later writings, Marx and Engels described the ideal communist society only in general terms such as â€Å"a system of social ownership under which production would be carried on by voluntary associations of workers, distribution would be in accordance with the needs, the state would cease to be an instrument of force and â€Å"wither away† and the individual would live in freedom and in harmony with society. Marx and Engels thought that the social revolution they aimed at could be carried out by peaceful means in some countries like England and The United States. 2) Marx and Engels used the term â€Å"communism† to distinguish their program from socialism which in the 1840’s meant economic and social reform. Some countries that are, or have been communist are the former U. S. S. R, Chin a, Germany, Guatemala, Cuba, Greece, Africa, Some parts of the United States, Turkey, Suez, Israel, North Korea, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and the southern part of Thailand. (2) We now move to socialism, what is socialism? As mentions before socialism is the doctrine that espouses public ownership or control of a major means of production. It aims to achieve an equitable and efficient distribution of social goods and greater economic planning then exist under capitalism. Although the central concerns of socialism appears to be economic its ramifications extend to the moral, social and political realms, in fact together with nationalism, it is the leading ideological and political movement of the 20th century. It is considered to be the transitional phase between the capitalism and communism. Thus, you would find all communists advocating for socialism because it lays the foundations for communism. It advocates an egalitarian society where everyone shares equal wealth and power . There is a considerable disagreement over how the distribution should take place. Hence, socialism can be said to be between extreme capitalism and extreme communism with it being nearer to communism. Socialism is liberal. More people have say in how the economy works. (5) The basic principles of contempary socialism have their origin in the economic, social and cultural transformations of Europe which occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries.Contributing factors were the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the bourgeois’ and proletarian classes, the enlightenment’s secular and rationalistic view of men and society, and the democratic demands of the French Revolution. Social ownership and control is the development of private property and it inordinate pursuit are seen by socialist theorist as the root causes of inequalities among men, of moral corruption, and of disruptions of the social order, this led to the abolition of private property or control over its u ndesirable manifestations, is fundamental tenet of socialism. The means advocated attaining this objective accounts for a broad range of socialist programs, from state ownership and regulation of the entire economy to anarchistic cooperative association; from mixed economy of publicity corporately and privately owned enterprises to national producers’ and consumers’’ cooperatives; from state sponsored social welfare programs to self-sufficient local communes. Socialist argues that the pernicious nature of private property was cleared disclosed with the development of capitalism. The growth of commerce and industry, coupled with the doctrine of Laissez faire, brought about the private ownership of the major means of productions by a small group of individuals, who intern was able to accumulate most of the wealth of the society. People began to move away from the country and the population became centralized. Cities grew rapidly and overcrowding became an enormous p roblem. This new industrial workforce, the proletariat, worked and lived in appalling conditions. Poverty was rampant. The cities were havens for crime and disease. The tumultuous transformation affected not only the lives of the workers but also craftsmen, such as handloom weavers, who were being forced out of business by factories which could produce the same product at a lower price. Much of the working class was confounded by the radical changes that were going on. Without anyone planning it, capitalism had emerged and began to flourish as there was no opposition to it. The factory owners became richer and low-skilled workers and the unemployed became poorer.Workers whose trades were less secured decided to form trade societies. This allowed the proletariat who had nothing to trade but their labor, to sell their labor for the best possible price. By uniting, workers could achieve results that could not be achieved individually. The central ideas of socialist have their roots in m ans perennial discontent with the conditions of his existence. They reflect his desire to overcome scarcity, inequality and social strife, and his longing for justice, happiness, perfection and at time for transcendence.Among the forerunners of modern socialism are the utopias of Plato with is book The Republic along with Sir Thomas More Utopia , 1516 and Tommase Campanella City of The Sun 1602, the experiments of the Anabaptist Sects in Central Europe, the theories of the Diggers and Levelers in England. (3) The theories of Marx and Engels represent the watershed of socialist thought. The collaborators synthesized the basic socialist ideas, gave them a comprehensive theoretical and practice expressions and influence their development.Although communism developed as an atheistic ideology the basic principles of socialism can be readily traced to the Christian idea of brother hood, it protests against the selfish pursuit of wealth, and its traditions of communal life. Indeed, Engels acknowledges the religious heritage of the socialist movement and considered the early Christians among the precursors of socialism. (3) Louis Blane and Constantine Pecqueur, who advocated public ownership, worker-managed industries and parliamentary democracy during the Revolution of 1848 in France, were the precursors of the socialism accepted by the modern social democratic parties. The Fabian society founded in 1884, set out to promote socialism through gradual democratically achieved reforms in England. Relying on propaganda, research, and public debate, the Fabians sought to â€Å"permate† trade unions, political parties and other gaps with their ideas. They succeeded with the middle and educated classes and they became influential in the labor and liberal parties. Among the earliest Fabians were G. B Shaw and Sidney Webb. Areas that were affected by socialism were European countries such as Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Estonia. In Asia you had North and South Korea, Vi etnam, Burma, Japan, Lon Nol, Singapore, Ceylon. In the Middle East there was Israel, Egypt, and Tunisia. In Africa there was Ghana, Sekov Toure, The Congo, Kenya and Tanganyika, and in Latin America there were Uruguay and Mexico. (3) This term was first coined by Karl Marx to describe a system in which small group of people own large amount of money, land, resources. It puts all the economy is the hands of wealthy business people with the only aim of maximizing profits.Such economies remain free of government intervention with all the policies being determined by private individuals. The result is monopoly, and a huge gap in the earnings among the employer class and the worker class. Though it’s very good for trades and industries to flourish, it can lead to worker exploitation and unethical business practices. â€Å"Laissez-Faire† capitalism which means pure capitalism with no government intervention is said to have never existed in practice. 5) Capitalism is the typ e of economy in which capital is privately owned and maybe freely used by the owners as they wish in attempting to make profits from their economic enterprise. This type of economy is known as Capitalistic system. Implicit in capitalism is the existence of an effective technique for exchanging good and services. In all but extremely primitive forms of capitalism presuppose the existence of a monetary and financial system. In the sense the term capitalism may be distinguished any economic system in which capital is privately owned and used by the owner as he wishes, capitalism is not of recent origin.Elements of this type of economic system may be traced back to early historical periods. Even in the hunting and fishing style of society, physical capital and financial capital were individually owned and used. Further capitalistic developments continued through the pastoral and agricultural stages and into the age of metal. By the time of the Greek and Roman civilizations, capitalism h ad become fairly well developed. The oppressive phase due to the Industrial Revolution in England drew much socialist criticism.Marx and others tended to generalize from the unfortunate aspects of the Industrial Revolution and to conduce that the explanation of labor was an inherent of evil capitalism. Marx predicted that under capitalism cyclical fluctuations in business activity would become increasingly severe. This would cause more and more members of the capitalist class to be reduced to the ranks of the proletariat. Eventually, he predicted the increasing misery of the proletarian class would lead it to overthrow the capitalistic system and replace it with some form of socialism. In 1776 Adam Smith, a Scottish university professor, produced a book which described the workings of a capitalist society. He believed that a country's wealth depends on all people pursuing their own interests. If a person promotes his own interest he or she is unintentionally promoting his country's i nterest. Smith thought that governments should promote free trade and not interfere by protecting certain industries from competition. The only duty of governments, Smith wrote, was to provide services that couldn't be profitable like the building of roads, schools and churches.

Strategic Resort Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Strategic Resort Management - Essay Example Lastly, the paper would also build a case for different actions that could be used to counteract the perceived threats and try to look for options which would help in meeting the anticipated opportunities. Tourism industry, with special regards to resorts, is considered an important sector in the UK economy. Back in the year 1999, an astounding 22 1/2 million visitors came to visit UK (Torkildsen, 2005). The expenditure on the tourism industry in 1999 was estimated close to sixty one billion pounds (Torkildsen, 2005) and the total employees catering to the tourism industry were estimated to be close to 1.8 million people. The tourism industry is widely fragmented and according to the government estimates, there are over 125,000 businesses related to the UK tourism, out of which only 20% have an earning of over 250,000 pounds per annum. (Aramberri & Butler, 2005) Tourism industry is the world's largest industry and hence it is vital for the world economy. It directly or indirectly generates 11% GDP and provides jobs to over 200 million employees across the globe (Holloway & Taylor, 2006). The employment opportunities in the UK alone, with special regards to bars, pubs, restraints, cafes, night clubs, travel agencies, tour operators and tourist accommodations are immense but the problem lies in terms of competition. (DCMS, 2000) Of the total number of tourism related business in the UK, 80% do not earn beyond 250,000 pounds per annum and hence the employment opportunities through these organizations have limited growth potentials (Aramberri & Butler, 2005). The above mentioned sectors are directly or indirectly dependent on the tourism industry and when we take the example of a resort, which in itself is a self sufficient tourist hub, we forget to underline the problems of a mismanaged work force. If one of these sectors suffers a loss, the other sectors would automatically be affected and vice versa. Besides providing various employment opportunities and generating an annual income for the growth of a nation, the tourism industry with special regards to resorts in UK, gives an ample scope to numerous educational institutions (ONS, 2000). Various new courses and subjects pertaining to tourism benefit through this expanding trade. (EuroStat, 1998) The Necessary Threats To Counteract And The Opportunities To Capitalize On The UK tourism industry is a boon of sorts and is stated to provide ample work opportunities to millions of its citizens. As far as opportunities are concerned, there is no bigger opportunity than providing employment to all. The need for money is the single most driving factor which propels the citizens of a nation to work towards achieving their goals in a systematic manner. Resorts in UK provide employment opportunities to hundreds of thousands of individuals and this in turn increases the overall employee satisfaction scores. (Mort, 2006) If the tourism industry is to capitalize on its recourses, it needs to justify its act in terms of providing ample opportunities to those who deserve the most. Likewise, the growth of a resort with regards to the influx of tourists is directly proportional to the growth of those sectors which support the basic functionalities of a resort (Karl W. W'ber, European Cities Tourism (Organization), 2002). Meat shops, cafes,

Super man Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Super man - Essay Example Superman constructs a certain role model of manliness reflecting popular 20th century concepts of masculinity. The most attractive feature in Superman figure is that he can transform from his superhero image to â€Å"the mediocre man of flesh and blood† which serves the mask to his extraordinary abilities. The personality of Superman is split. He has a private life which has nothing to do with his public heroism. In everyday life Superman is Clark Kent, ordinary journalist, clumsy and soft. The contrast between two identities is maximized to emphasise masculinity features. The dual identity of the hero from the launch of Superman series became a formula of masculine image. On one hand the superhero has body which is vividly masculine as well as the confidence and power which suggest of the ideal of man, on the other hand he is soft, powerless, unconfident representing a feminized man. Superhero images have always blended masculinity with muscles. The most obvious external signifier of masculinity has been the male body. Male body images reflect all the conventions related with male superiority. Muscles symbolizing masculine physical strength serve as a code for sexual difference. The muscular body is clear sign of masculine power. (Brown, 1999 p.25) Muscles are associated with masculinity so strongly that women like professional body builders who exhibit ‘noticeable muscularity’ are accused in manliness while men who lack muscular power are criticized for being too feminine. The contrast of two identities of the hero plays an important role in shaping masculinity image. That makes Superman a masculine ideal of 20th century. Superman possesses exceptional qualities like flying, gliding on air currents, seeing through walls. He gets more and more powers equalling to God. Besides, he is a defender of truth with exceptional feeling of justice and handsome looks. Clark

Competitive Strategies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Competitive Strategies - Essay Example Coca- Cola and Pepsi-Cola are two leading soft drinks in the USA. Both are represented by values cherished by the state including democracy, independence, fun and free. The color, taste and amount of carbon dioxide in both drinks are nearly the same. Coca cola is the leading brand across the globe with a leading brand value of $ 67,000 million. Its competitor Pepsi Cola has a brand of $ 12,690 million. Coca-Cola is the best recognized brand in the world and is known for owning top five soft drinks in the world that is, Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta (Bodden 2009). Coca- Cola strong brand value has positively impacted in its penetration to new markets as it consolidates the existing market. Coca-Cola was designed in 1885 by John Stith Pemberton who was a pharmacist (Bodden 2009). The name Coke was derived from the presence of cocaine in coke, this cocaine was claimed to reduce depression and made coke drinkers addicted to the drink. The Food and Drug Administration later abolished the presence of cocaine in the drink hence making the industry remove the ingredient cocaine in the drink. Although the company maintained the beverage’s name, its demand started to reduce. The company therefore resulted in aggressive advertising to promote the beverage. Pepsi on the other hand was also designed by a pharmacist, Caleb Bradham in 1898 and was named after its creator as ‘Brad drink’ (Bodden 2008). It also placed emphasis on advertising. Its advertisement challenged that of Coca-Cola since PepsiCo used celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Jackie Chan and Britney Spears among others to advertise its drinks making it popular among sports fans and the young as w ell as promoting the image of non-conformity and confidence (Doole and Lowe 2008). A Pepsi advertisement featuring Britney Spears indicated Pepsi as a drink for all,
